    The Empire of Zakat Basics

Present Time in Zakat: 500 A.E.

Official Languages: Zakatian (Russian); Common/Universal (English)
    Approx. Total Population: 120,000,000
Arcanists per Capita: 1:200 (approx. .5% of total population)
    Government: Empire ruled by a single Emperor;
    Current Premier:
Prime Exports: Clocks and other timepieces; steam-powered machinery; electricity; wiring; precision technology; weapons
Demonym: Zakatian (pronounced with a -shun and not a "-teean")
The Empire's Reputation: The Empire of Zakat is known as a progressive, technological enclave. They are welcoming, but stiff people. They are known to shun Arcanists, and there are very, very few places to get enchanted weapons or magical items in Zakat. They dislike Arcadia as a whole, and Arcadians are more unwelcome than most Arcanists.

    Zakatians at a Glance

    Average Male Height: 6'0
    Average Female Height: 5'5"
Most Common Eye Color: Blue, Green/Teal. Brown is the third-most common. Other colors are very uncommon.
Most Common Hair Color: Blonde is the most common. Black and brown are also common. Other colors are very uncommon. Red hair is almost non-existent and is found only in the southwestern edge. White hair can only be found on the northern edge of the country, bordering with Arcadia.

    Basic Overview

    Geography

The Empire of Zakat may be the smallest country geographically, but it makes up for that by leading the world in sheer technological growth. Zakat is known as "The Bridge of the World," as it is the only landmass that connects the northern Arcadian continent with the southern Braukan-Cierian continent. There were many attempts long before the current borders were established to take Zakat, but its people held strong and refused to be overtaken by the outside. Zakat thrived as a trade epicenter. The mixing of technology from three different countries sped up Zakat's own technological renaissance. Zakat soon rose from being a trade center to being a fierce military power with technology that rivals what other countries call magic.

Geographically, Zakat is quite varied. There are mountains and jungles, and even forests throughout its land. Zakat's most unique geographical feature is Mount Solai. Mount Solai is Aurora's only active volcano. It draws tourists each year, and guards are posted around the mountain to make sure that people don't decide to take a bath in the magma. Zakat is split between three states within the Empire. The three states of Zakat are Belka to the south, Emmeria to the east, and Yuktobania to the north. Each state was originally its own country, but they were united under the flag of the Empire of Zakat centuries ago. The states have their own cultural differences, although they are hard to tell apart by tourists and outsiders.

    Politics

Zakat is led by the Emperor. The Emperor has always been a male, although that has been preference on the predecessor rather than any rule. There actually is no law that says a female can not be Emperor. The Emperor's successor is chosen by the Emperor himself. Usually, this is their child. The heir to the throne does not have to be blood related, however. There are documented cases where the Emperor instead chose a trusted general or advisor.. The Empress is the Emperor's wife, and she holds no political power whatsoever—unless her husband dies and leaves no heir. The Empress is then allowed to select the next Emperor. If there is no Empress when the Emperor dies and he has no heir, the eldest Grand-General takes the position.

The Emperor has override power on all matters within Zakat. He may not make every single decision within Zakat, but he does have the final say-so. The Emperor is also the only person with the power to declare war. While the Emperor controls Zakat itself, the three states are sub-governed by Governor-Generals. Each one controls the armed forces within the state as well as manages them. Governor-Generals appoint cabinet members to handle specifics such as agriculture, housing and urban development, and the treasury. The Emperor does as well, although that is for the overall empire rather than the individual states.

    Citizens

Zakatians are known to be blonde and blue-eyed. The reason for this is unknown, and there are many theories as to why. They are tall people, with the average male height at 6'0 and the average female at 5'7. Very few Zakatians have Arcana. Zakatians are known for their loyalty. It's hard to find Zakatian spies for that matter. This is one reason Zakat doesn't have as strong of a foreign intelligence network as people might suspect. But it does allow for Zakat to have an iron-clad defense against foreign spying. Zakatians are also derogatorily called stupidly loyal. Because they are. It takes a lot for a Zakatian to turn their back on someone. There's a Zakatian saying "We might punch one another. We might kick one another. We might stab one another. In extreme cases, we might even shoot one another. But the next day? We will be laughing about it and enjoying our time together."

Zakatians are friendly people overall, although they may come off as stiff at first. They'll give a weary traveler a bed or couch if he asks for one. They'll make him do a little bit of work or cleaning for it, but they'll still give them a bed. Zakatians are religious, although not nearly as much as they were a century ago. Despite being so progressive, Zakatian people are stubborn. They don't like revolutionary change. When the country switched over from gas lighting to electric lighting, there were riots. But those died down once people realized there was a lack of sudden explosions. Other things like that have caused uproars, but technology itself is not something people are against.

Zakatians are against Arcanists, however. They have always disliked Arcanists (save for Evokers), as what they can do is not something most people can. There has always been a sort-of mob mentality when it comes to Zakatians. Unless someone is disabled, Zakatians are expected to pick up where another person left off. Because Arcanists are hard to come by, it's not easy to just replace someone. Arcanists are a thorn in the side of the Zakatian ideal that all humans are capable of doing the same things if their heart is in the right place. In the old days, Arcanists were burned at the stake for being an affront to Gradimir. That practice was abolished around 50 years ago.

Most Zakatians make their living by working in factories or in the trade sector. The government owns all factories for general goods and weaponry, but specialty goods (such as complex optics) have factories owned by contractors. Zakatians are industrious people, and overtime is usually only a complaint for those with a family. There are very few factories in the actual cities, but they are instead located on the outskirts of the cities. Inside the cities, most of workforce is in the commercial sector. They sell the goods that are produced outside.

    The Empire of Zakat Cities

    Iserlohn, the Imperial Capital

    The Empire of Zakat Iserlohn

Named for the former fortress which stood there many centuries ago, Iserlohn has had a rich history. Iserlohn is Zakat's largest city as well as its capital. It houses the most Zakatians than any other city (nearly half of Zakat is within Iserlohn's walls). Iserlohn is full of sharp edges and multi-story buildings. Many buildings seem to have an eerie shine to them, like they are constantly polished. There are paved streets throughout Iserlohn, as well as rails for inner-city transportation. However, most streets are not at ground level. Due to Iserlohn's extreme traffic conditions, designers decided to build roads above the ground as well. They are sometimes built onto buildings or supported by pillars from underneath. There is one area without the multi-level streets, and that is what can be called the "Historic District." It is full of museums and parks, as well as a pair of parallel canals which wind around the central cobblestone path.
    Population: 45,000,000
    Crime: Extremely Low
Places of Note: The Imperial Palace of Laplace; the Historic District

    Solai, the Desert Star

    The Empire of Zakat Solai

Solai is the largest Zakatian city near the Braukan border. It is surrounded by massive walls meant to keep out invaders. The walls are the oldest part of the city, even though they have been vastly upgraded over the years. Solai itself is known for shining brightly in the empty lands around it, making it known as the "Desert Star."  When you see Solai from a distance, the first discernable shapes are four large obelisks that extend 500 feet into the air. Then is the slightly smaller 455-foot-high Longinius Pyramid, the main government building and trade center of Solai. The obelisks house high-power reactors, which power the entire city of Solai. Solai can operate on just two of them, although that puts great strain on them. The Longinius Pyramid, the obelisks, and the wall surrounding the city are all a sleek, reflective black that is strangely cool to the touch.
    Population: 4,500,000
    Crime: Average
    Places of Note: The Longinius Pyramid;

    _______________________________________________

    Mont Blanc, the Mountain Fortress

    The Empire of Zakat MontBlanc

Mont Blanc is regarded as the largest military fortification in Zakat. It is a city built more up than out. Most of the city is actually part of the High Tower, the government and military epicenter of the city. The High Tower is a watchtower/fortress that extends high enough into the air to match some of the mountain peaks to the north. This way, the Imperial Army stationed here can see if the Arcadians finally decide to make a move. The city is heavily fortified, and new construction is heavily regulated. Most of the new construction is actually built on the ceilings of existing floors now, creating a one-of-a-kind look.
    Population: 3,900,000
    Crime: None
Places of Note: The High Tower
    _______________________________________________

    Khul, the Arena City

    The Empire of Zakat Khul

Khul is the largest Zakatian city near the Cierian border. As it is busy trading with the county which deals with beastkind, Khul is known for its extraordinarily-wide streets. The city is built on a hill, and so there are not many large structures. That said, there is the Grand Colliseum, which can house one million specators. The arena itself can be divided into eight 4-acre fields, with a center field left unoccupied. In grand events, however, the dividing walls can be brought down for a 36-acre (416x416 yards, 381x381 meters). It is the largest structure in Khul, whose height is only surpassed by an ancient acqueduct built higher on the hill. There is also a large open-air bazaar that occupies the main square.
    Population: 3,500,000
    Crime: Average
Places of Note: Grand Colliseum; Grand Bazaar

    _______________________________________________

    Fennmont, the Everdusk City

    The Empire of Zakat Fennmont

Fennmont is the largest Zakatian city near the Arcadian border. Even with its obvious Arcadian influences, Fennmont is still a very Zakatian city. The city has many high-rises that soar into the sky, housing business and people alike. On street-level, the buildings are very intricately ornated, but that ornateness fades as they reach into the skies above. What separates Fennmont from every other city on Aurora is that it has no daytime. From a distance, Fennmont looks like a ball of haze. The haze is not harmful, but inside the city, there is not strong enough sunlight to bring about daytime. The city is thus stuck in an eerie green night forever, as all attempts to remove the haze (even the giant fan idea) did not pan out.
    Population: 3,300,000
    Crime: Average
    Places of Note:

    _______________________________________________

    Seinburn, the City Above Water

    The Empire of Zakat Seinburn

Seinburn  is a unique city in that most of the city is far above the ground. The entire city is built upon a set of large floodgates that bridge the sea and the deep lake that is behind Seinburn. This allows for ships to pass into the lake to dock, which allows for shipping traffic to be handled easier. There aren't many building atop the Sein Seagate, but instead inside of it. It is more like a single, large building than an entire city. However, the actual Sein Seagate is made of many buildings with a a section cut out for the Sein Canal.
    Population: 3,000,000
    Crime: Low
    Places of Note: Sein Canal; Lake Sein;

    _______________________________________________

Hedoria, the Enclave in the Valley

    The Empire of Zakat Hedoria

Hedoria is a city nestled between two mountain ranges. Most of its buildings are made of stone and look like it was all carved from a single rock. It is home to the Universitas Oculatus, where students from around Aruroa may attend to study technology that no other country has. The New Imperial College isn't the only thing there, as the city also houses the New Imperial Military Academy, a school that takes in children as young as 10 enrolls them in programs to be successful politicians or soldiers. It was founded only five years ago, so it is relatively new and is still undergoing changes in its programs. The city is uniqu e from other Zakatian cities in that it does not have any public transportation inside of the city. There is a station outside of the city for the inter-city rail network.
    Population: 2,500,000
    Crime:
    Places of Note: Universitas Oculatus; New Imperial Military Academy;

    _______________________________________________

    Arkhangelsk, the Sinking City

    The Empire of Zakat Arkhangelsk

Arkhangelsk can be said to be an odd city, even for Zakatian standards. It does not have a single building over 4 stories high, although part of that is due to the marshlands it is situated on. The fact is that the outer areas of the city have sunk beneath the water and pose a hazard for large ships. Cities near the shore are built atop other buildings and are supported by large sets of stilts. Except on the southern and northern borders of the city, there are no roads within Arkhangelsk. Most transportation is done via winding canals.
    Population: 1,700,000
    Crime: Low
    Places of Note: Sunken areas of the city;

    The Empire of Zakat Towns%20and%20Villages

    Manalt

    The Empire of Zakat Manalt

Manalt is merely a small border town. It's not a place of note, and barely exists on some maps. The town's population fluctuates as it is a border town. The military has an outpost there, and that is where Manalt grew from. The border with Arcadia is probably their major point of interest, and there is actually a shop for magic items built right across the border in Arcadia.

    Location: North of Mont Blanc
    Population: 1,000~1,500
    Crime: Medium-Low
    Places of Note: Arcadian Border

    Kelna

    The Empire of Zakat Kelna

Kelna is a large town built near Mount Solai. It is one of the few towns in Aurora that has natural hot springs thanks to Mount Solai being nearby. It's built on a hill to the east of Mount Solai, so it is not in the way of a potential volcanic eruption. Kelna has a few smaller hot springs, but the Kelna Saint Springs are the largest ones. It is large enough to be a pool and have a small restaurant where you just swim up to the bar. Smaller hot springs can be rented out for private purposes.

Location: 60 miles east of Mount Solai
    Population: 25,000
    Crime: Medium
Places of Note: Lots of natural hot springs, Kelna Saint Springs

    The Empire of Zakat Geography

    Geography
    Fell Jungle

    The Empire of Zakat FellJungle

The Fell Jungle is the largest jungle in Zakat, encompasing approximately 17,600 square miles of land. It is extremely hot and humid with temperatures in the daytime averaging 100 degrees Fahrenheit with 80% humidity. This makes traveling inside of it nearly impossible unless it is via a train. There are rumors of extensive old ruins within, although only a few old houses have been found.

    _______________________________________________

    Solai Veldt

    The Empire of Zakat SolaiVeldt

The Solai Veldt is a large arid grassland encompassing most of Zakat's southern territory. The temperatures range from 60 to 80 degrees in the day and 30 to 50 at night. The terrain itself isn't that good for farming, but it is great for rasing livestock. The terrain is mostly flat with only the areas around the Nargundin Crags and Mount Solai being hilly. Mount Solai is the biggest terrain feature in the veldt. Mount Solai is a large, active volcano and currently the only known one on Aurora.

    _______________________________________________

    Nargundin Crags

    The Empire of Zakat Nargundin

The Nargundin Grags is the only mountain range within Zakat's borders. They are extremely steep mountains that are nearly impossible to climb. The crags are split into the North Faces and South Faces, whch are separated by a small valley in which the city of Hedoria sits. The crags provide great natural defense, as many rivers run deep within the ground, thus mining it is always risky.

    _______________________________________________

    Jungle of Fangs

    The Empire of Zakat Fangs

The Jungle of Fangs is a large jungle near the Cierian border. It covers only 8,800 square miles of land compared to the Fell Jungle. The Jungle of Fangs is home to many creatures, many of them living within the wetlands and rivers that run throughout the jungle. There isn't much solid ground in the center of the jungle, as most of it is like a swamp. However, there is a solid bedrock layer underneath most of the jungle, so building within it is not impossible.

    _______________________________________________

    Witchfen River

    The Empire of Zakat Witchfen

The Witchfen River runs through the Jungle of Fangs. It is 220 miles long in Zakatian territory, but extends a further 110 miles into Cierian territory. It is wide enough for two steamships to easily pass through, even though they rarely do as no cities lie on the banks of the dangerous river.

    _______________________________________________

    Doomblade March

    The Empire of Zakat Doomblade

To the east of the city of Khul is the Doomblade March. Its name is a corruption of Doomblade Marsh, but it has stuck with cartographers everywhere so it has not changed. The marsh is extremely wet, with most of its land having an average of 2 inches of water over it. Tall grass grows thickly throughout the marsh with only the areas of swift currents lacking it. It is usually impossible to tell what is land and what is underwater. The areas of swift current are strong enough to sweep someone off of their feet if thet are caught off-guard. The rule of thumb is that if there is no grass, do not step there, no matter how calm it looks. The currents are notorious for hiding beneath a calm surface. An army was once led through one of these streams, which led to the deaths of nearly 1,000 soldiers as they were swept away and knocked into one another. The only things that remained of many of them were their weapons, which had fallen deep enough into the ground to avoid floating away like their owners. The large amount of weapons still being found today led to its name as the Doomblade March..

    _______________________________________________

    Silverwood Forest

    The Empire of Zakat Silverwood

The Silverwood Forest is probably the most contested zone of Zakatian territory. Although it only claims a small part of it, that small part leads into the deeper areas under Arcadian control. Thus, Zakat actually has a very relaxed border policy for the interior of the forest. If someone accidentally crosses their borders and are caught, they will be turned back into Arcadian territory. The forest itself is home to many small villages and houses, as the Falcon River empties into the sea after passing through 100 miles of Zakatian territory.

    The Empire of Zakat Technology

NOTE: Technology listed here does NOT exist anywhere else, except in Zakat unless I say so. This list is NOT final and will be expanded upon.

    • Electricty. This is basic electricity like what the modern world has. Impossible to export.
    • Diesel and gasoline engines. These can be exported.
    • Radio. Although other countries might have Arcane-based relays, Zakat is the only country with modern radio technology. Hard to export.
    • Robotics. Zakat has minor robotics. No Pacific Rim here, people. It's mainly things like power armor. Will never be exported.
    • Powered flight. Zakat is the only country with powered flight. This means airships, planes (propeller-driven only), and helicopters only exist within Zakat. Not for export.
    • Modern Firearms. Zakat is the only country with firearms that are comparable to the post 19th-century world. This includes, but is not limited to, reliable rockets (not guided missiles), automatic weapons, and modern explosives.
