Appearance: Despite what it may seem, Juline is quite muscular. She just isn't ripped. Most of her muscles are thick and developed, so to handle the recoil of her mighty Mycroft amusette (as well as to hold the bloody thing).
Character Information
Personality: Juline is an addict. She isn't addicted to smoking, drinking, or a normal drug. Juline is an addict to her own powers. She carries around a snuff box filled with, of all things, gunpowder for this reason. She enjoys the pain-numbing, sense-enhancing, and almost-euphoric trance it puts her in. Her body craves the feeling, and she'll get a nosebleed and a headache if she goes a day without the stuff. She won't take anyone's shit if they call her out on it. Juline will snap at them at the very least and bash a rib or two with her amusette at the most.
Juline has a short temper. Rather, she has a short fuse. Get it? Because of gunpowder? And igniting it? Bad jokes aside, Juline loathes criticism. She knows she's not perfect, but hearing every single mistake she makes infuriates her. While she's gotten close to abandoning a job because of someone's criticisms, Juline has never had to follow through with that, thankfully. She enjoys her job, and she usually doesn't have to deal with many people.
Juline doesn't like crowds. They make her nervous beyond all belief. She makes sure to buy all of her supplies when a shop is about to close or when it just opens. She never goes in the middle of rush hour. Juline also can't handle enclosed areas. Small bathrooms are about as far as she can go before freaking out. She doesn't like trains, but will take them if need be. She prefers walking or riding in a wagon.
Character Background: Juline was born and raised about two days' ride out from Caydale in the Fangwood Forest. Her father was the village butcher, and her mother helped. Joseph, her father, was a hunter, and he taught Juline how to shoot and maintain a musket from a very early age. Her family was, in fact, the only family of the village that had a firearm of any sort. Kids would ask to see it, and the men were jealous of the weapon. Juline was always the most enthralled by it. Catherine, her mother, was worried that Juline might get hurt with such a dangerous thing around. Instead, Juline discovered her power while on a hunt with her father. She sneezed and ignited the powder horn that had been set aside. Her father trained her the best he could, as he had a similar ability. Hers turned out to be much stronger, and it wasn't until she decided to taste gunpowder that he realized just how strong she was.
When Juline was 16, her life changed for the worse. She awoke one night to her mother's screaming. She grabbed the hunting knife she kept beside her, and ran through the house. Juline saw a woman standing over her mother and father's body, bloody beyond belief. Juline blacked out, but not before the face was etched into her memory. The woman was nowhere to be found afterward, and Juline was orphaned. She found out that her mother and father had both been killed with a knife, their throats slit. There wasn't anything missing, so the motive was unclear. Juline had it set in her mind that the woman she saw was the killer, and she sought revenge soon after being released from the town doctor.
Juline joined up with the Arcadian Defense Legion, and she was sent out as part of the mountain watch in the Sharbilnarg Highlands. She took pot shots at smugglers and thieves trying to leave or enter Arcadia, and she soon made a name for herself. By age 22, she was regarded as the best sniper in the entire ADL. Then, Juline vanished. She became a myth within the ADL, and a threat to ne'er-do-wells. Juline had asked for an investigation repeatedly into the murder of her parents. They could spare one man to do this, right? Wrong. They denied her every time, and it wasn't until her commanding officer told her to stop that she decided to look on her own. She made her way to Varedia, and she ended up in the not-as-traveled downtown. Juline found a corner bar, and the bartender simply said with a smile "You look like you need a drink. Tell me what you like, and I'll make it for you." Within two months, she had joined up with him as a member of the Black Cross. As a member of the Black Cross, she prefers to keep her identity secret and so she asks to be called "Jules." She also has an open mission for anyone that can locate her parents' murderer, or that can help her locate the bitch...
Magic
Type: Sorcerer
Description: Juline's magic comes from gunpowder. She has the innate ability to manipulate gunpowder. Using a gun against Juline is a futile gesture. The main part of Juline's power is that she can ignite powder from a distance of 50 yards. Thus, if someone pulls a gun on her, she can have the bullet fire late. In that same distance, Juline can manipulate the ignition of powder. This isn't igniting it, but changing what happens when it is ignited. Using the same example, she can have the force of the explosion be redirected downward. Thus, the bullet won't fire out. But that's not all. Juline can also detect all gunpowder or black powder within 200 yards if she puts her senses to it. Zakatian air rifles are her biggest threat.
Bullet Floating: When firing a bullet with gunpowder, Juline can "float" the bullet. This means that she uses tiny bits of gunpowder to keep a bullet on a course or to slightly alter it. She can float a bullet up to 100 yards out. After that, it is stuck in its trajectory.
Angle Shooting: Once per post, Juline can angle a bullet. This is like floating, but using more force to, say, make a bullet go around a corner. It requires impeccable timing, and she usually doesn't make the mark with it. It also has a nasty side-effect of head pain. She says "when you're angle shooting, it feels like a hammer struck the back of your head. A successful one hurts worse."
Powder Trance: This is what Juline is addicted to. If Juline ingests gunpowder, she enters a "high." Juline's powers do not change when she is under the effects of a powder trance. All of Juline's senses increase by 50%, except her eyesight which increases by 150%. It calms her nerves and can stop her hands from shaking. What's more, it also increases her pain tolerance and awakeness. While under the effects of a powder trance, Juline gains a +15 to speed and endurance.
Combat
Equipment: Juline carries around a powder horn, a short sword, and trail rations usually.
Mycroft LVII Amusette: This is Juline's pride and joy. It is a 2000G work of artistic destruction. The Mycroft LVII Amusette isn't one of a kind. No, the Braukan army uses these too. They're mounted on walls of forts and guard towers. It is a 1.5in flintlock musket used mainly to break through thick shields or armor. It's also a fantastic hunting weapon—in Cieria. Juline takes good care of it and carries it in a case that cost almost as much as the musket itself. What makes Juline's Mycroft LVII special is that it was made for her by the heir to the Mycroft gunsmithy as payment for a job. It has a custom-made scope that runs the length of the barrel. While a bit excessive (the actual scope outranges the musket), it's the best spyglass anyone could ask for. It has a short bipod and brass inlays across the darkwood stock. She is currently trying to find someone who will make a bayonet for it.
Skills: Juline is perhaps one of the best marksmen on Aurora. She can hit a bullseye from 1000 yards away on a windy day. Her mind calculates a lot of those things without even thinking about it now. She's a semi-decent swordsman as well, although she's only good when defending herself. She'd rather keep her distance. Juline also knows how to skin many forest animals, how to prepare meat, and how to care for meat.
