It was a crowded day. The sun was high in the sky and the weather was nice. The temperature was moderate, a time where people were out doing whatever they needed to do. Of course, this was the city of Grandview. It was a place for the scum of Aurora: murderers, thieves, con-artists, slavers, and manipulators of all kinds gathered here to do their business. It was the one city that was not under control of any government. Citizens were actually warned at different posts surrounding the city, about ten miles out, that if they chose to enter this place they would no longer be under the protection of the Arcadian government. Yes, it was a city that had gotten that bad. Mob bosses, crime families, and other terrible organizations controled this area and there was no law to stop it.

One of these families was the Vonnera; they are a family that is highly hated, highly feared, and wealthy enough to keep their control. Getting their money through threats, extortion, drugs, and brothels they own through out Grandview and in few spots on the outside of the city, the Vonnera have been able to keep a tight grip on many aspects of Grandview. And one of these aspects came in the from of a young woman: Maria Vonnera. She took on the family's last name when she was much younger. Now, she was given a mission, one that she thought she was given to prove herself and uphold her family's honor. Her naive nature getting the best of her though. She approached the residence that she was to infiltrate. Many people were out, but none seemed to notice her.

Actually, they were ignoring her. Maria was not someone that anyone really deemed suspicious. Her noticable white hair and bluish colored eyes were a dead give away. Beyond that, her petite nature and clumsy way of acting pretty much told everyone that she had no skill. Unfortunately for them, that wasn't entirely true. She made her way into the house without being stopped and went stealth mode. She moved fluidly through the house, keeping herself shockingly quiet. She searched room after room until she came to one that had a guard posted outside. "This has to be it." she said and pulled out a blow dart. Aiming it carefully, she shot a dart into the side of the man's neck. He went to grab it and pulled it out. Before he could do anything, his body fell to the ground.

"No, no!" Maria thought as she darted forward, trying to catch the armored man before his body would cause a loud clank. She was too slow. The clanking echoed through the halls and she winced with how loud it was. Glancing up and down the halls, no one seemed to be coming. She took a deep breath and decided she needed to hurry. She was too weak to move the body, so this needed to be done. She opened the door and looked inside, popping her head through the crack and looking around for the man she was here to kill. And as her head to turned to the right, she saw him sitting at a table, looking directly at her. Maria blinked a few times and stared at this man. "Uh..." she said as she pulled a knife from a hidden area on her body (behind the door so he couldn't see), "Hi."

In very few places in the world can cutthroats and millionaires stand at the same intersection as they travel to their place of work. It's also very rare that their place of business is the same. But of course, there is only one Grandview. The black mark in Arcadia's history and the town which brings only hushed whispers and worried stares when it is mentioned aloud, Grandview was an absolutely pleasant place to live. If you're a rat, that is.

The government in this town was by its own people. No one was elected, and heriditary rule was only common for very few. And rarely did a dynasty last more than two or three generations. Those families which had six generations or more were the ones no one liked to fuck around with. But the crime in the city was not 'crime' by the city's law. In fact, there were only two laws in Grandview: Don't fuck a kid and don't beat your wife or kid. Even murderers have standards.

One of the families which had considerable influence nowadays was the Scarlettelli. The bastards known for their bright red (and markedly crimson and not scarlet) had a recent resurgence in power. A new boss with enough dirt on the city to bury it ten times over had taken the reins—and had made business far better than it was before. Business being all sorts of things—whether it be their specialization on murder-for-hire (or as they called it "selective relocation") or their stakes in drugs, women, and extortion. And now, business was good.

But everyone had enemies, and il Drago was no different. Il Drago was the nickname of the new boss of the Scarlettelli family. His real name was far less terrifying by just the sound, but the weight the name carried in Grandview was enough to warrant being called 'The Dragon.' Neil Reagan O'Cary was a native to Grandview. Thirty-two years living within the city's walls was enough to change a man to fit the climate. And this man had acclimated very well.

Neil was a man who enjoyed simple things. He enjoyed a nice, relaxing lunch. He enjoyed reading at night, and he enjoyed a nice stroll through the town. Of course, living in the modern-day-castle of a mansion did not sell that point very well. His assistants were paid well, and he made sure to tip the butler whenever he could. He was a simple man living a complicated life.

It was just past one in the afternoon—the grandfather clock's thirteen rings sold this point. Neil had just finished his lunch in the area he called his 'study.' Truthfully, it was more like a waiting room for a lawyer's office. Not that he was a lawyer, nor would there be one so stupid as to go to Grandview. Neil wiped crumbs from a rather delectable sandwich and placed the cloth napkin back on the plate. It would be washed, of course.

Neil stood up and poured himself some tea as he held an appointment book in one hand. His next appointment would be in an hour, and it was to discuss a loan. Loans were one thing Neil was good on. He'd keep his word if they kept theirs. They pay him back and he would not have to 'selectively relocate' someone they cared about. Business is business, and Neil was damn good at handling business.

Unfortunately, the sound of the guard outside of his door falling forced him to reschedule such an appointment. Neil did not call out to his guard. Old Johnny would know not to do anything stupid like respond anyways. If Johnny thought the boss was in danger, he would have yelled. He had that kind of coarse voice that carried well through the carpeted halls of Neil's manor.

Neil instead did the polite thing. He expected a guest, so he had to properly greet them. He poured them a cup of tea and sat it on a table which overlooked the door. He planted himself down in the chair, teacup in hand and legs crossed. And he waited. Soon, the door opened quite slowly and only extended to a small crack. A small girl poked her head in—and greeted him with an awkward 'hi.'

Neil smiled slightly, and extended a hand in a welcoming fashion. "Please, do come in." His tone was relaxed, and he made sure both of his hands were visible at all times. Neil did not need his hands to rip a man's throat out. And this little girl would be a ragdoll to his 'ace in the hole.' She entered a bit more, and Neil did not so much as blink. "I do not have an appointment this hour. And it looks as though you are here to... discuss business. I am sure there is somethin' we can work out."

Uh oh. He saw her first. Wasn't this bad? Didn't this mean the mission was a failure? No, no, no! Not her first mission! The Vonnera were going to be so mad at her. It's okay. All she had to do was kill him, then everything would still be accomplished. Who cares if he saw her first, right? Right. But this was strange... Welcoming your killer in? Interesting! Let's go along with it.

His strange greeting had thrown Maria off a bit, but hers had been just ask awkward. "Okay!" she said enthusiastically and stepped forward. Her foot got caught on the guards hand and she ended up falling in and dropping the knife into his view. Quickly picking it up and scrambling to her feet, she closed the door behind her and pointed the knife toward him as if it were some sort of challenge. "You! Mister Dragon..." she said in the most challenging tone she could muster. Her voice was high pitched, light, and rather child-like. Even though she was an adult, it was almost like her voice decided to stay in the past. "I have been sent here by the Vonnera family to assai-.. assasse... ass-... kill you!" she said, a little embarrassed by the stumble over her words, but then she blinked a bit.

"Wait... Talk again?" she said as more of a polite suggestion than anything else. She ran her way over to the chair and sat down like he had asked previously, but the expression she held was one of curiosity. She had this wide-eyed look of wonder crossing over her face and her head was tilted slightly to the side. "Oh wait." she said again, pulling up the knife and pointing it toward him as if she had almost forgot why she even came here, "I'm sorry, but the Vonnera said I have to kill you..."

Someone like her was not sent to kill. No, the Vonerra had both insulted Neil and thrown this girl to the wolves—or to the dragon, in this case. She was a lost lamb not meant for this kind of world, but she had one thing that could have her rise above the rest. She had spunk. She may have been as naive as a small child, but she had the spunk of two rowdy puppies. She had potential, and that was something he could see very clearly. A shame for the Vonnera. Then again, they always seemed to throw away great things if it didn't live up to its expected role. The rug he bought off of them may have not matched their gaudy color scheme, but it did sit rather well in his study.

As she tried to threaten him, Neil just looked her over. He could see so many errors in her stance. Had he any experience with them, it would be like a Saturday morning cartoon hero. A 'champion of justice' and whatnot. He mentally chuckled at how strange this girl was. He could easily pull out the .38 magnum in his duster pocket and end this right here and now. But no, he wasn't going to splatter her brain and heart against the wall. He could find a use for her enthusiasm. All it took now was his strong-suit: words. She tried to point the knife at him from across the table, and Neil responded by enjoying his tea.

"It will be hard to drink your tea with a knife in your hand. Why don't you put down such a useless tool and enjoy something. I assure you the Vonnera have nothing like this tea. It is grown on my own grounds, you see." Neil sat his tea down and steepled his hands—his elbows resting on his knees.

"As I said, you seem to have come here for 'business.' And to you, that business is that you are here to gut me with that knife. I can give you my word that your job was not meant to succeed. Otherwise, they would have sent someone who can pick me off from a long range. And one who is... more silent."

"You were sent here to die, to put it in a way your brain can comprehend easiest. You were not worth a damn thing to the Vonnera apparently, and I can tell that they must have given you praises of 'you can do it' among other falsities. But the fact is, you can't. You may have been able to incapacitate my guards, but that will be all the praise you'll get on your tombstone. Well, in this city, they don't quite have those, do they?" He let out a small chuckle at his own joke.

"But even so, I can give you a counter-offer—if", Neil leaned in, his hands now crossed on the table, "you will hear it out."

Even with a knife pointed at him, Maria could not help but smile. The expression she held was one of curiosity. If this were any other situation, she'd be giggling her ass off. The few moments he mentioned the Vonnera betrayal, her smile did fall, but when he started talking again, it returned. It was like she was only getting half of what he was actually saying. Where the rest was going? No one would know. She kept slowly tilting her head back and forth, watching him with this goofy ass smile. After a lot of his talking and Maria only hearing half of it, he leaned in and crossed his hands on the table. With a bigger smile, Maria bit her bottom lip and giggled behind her white glove covered hands. "You talk funny!" she said as she lowered her hands and smiled brightly at him, "I like it."

It was then that a strange white dot made itself apparent on Neil's clothing. Maria recognized it and realized then that what he said was true. The white dot moved from his lower gut and up toward the middle of his chest. When it finally kept still, Maria's eyes widened and she let out a worried gasp. The dot suddenly turned read and, without really thinking, she stood up and lunged forward at him. "LOOK OUT!" she screamed at the top of her lungs as her body flew forth and tackled him out of the way. It was then that a small sound of shattering glass could be heard. A bead of compressed Arcana flew passed them both and landed about ten feet in the other direction. Not even a full second later, the room lit up. The spell began to activate and expanded to the size of a basketball.

"It's gonn-..." Maria couldn't even get off a full sentence before the spell fully went off. The expanded sphere turned into a ball of fire and exploded outwards, creating a large burst of flame with enough force behind it to knock out all of the windows and the wall it was closest to. A second later, the entire blast ended and smoke filled the room. Maria began coughing and lifted herself to look at Neil. "A-Are you okay?" she struggled to speak. She was trying not to cough anymore, but there was a lot of smoke filling the room and it wouldn't be able to fully clear just yet. "You were right..." she said, coughing a bit more, "They really didn't care..." Maria's face saddened, as if she had been completely betrayed just then. The only people she knew as her family had just tried to kill her; she was heart broken.

Neil did not quite know how to respond to this young lass. She was odd; definitely. She liked the way he talked, and it was normal for people to bring up his accent upon their first meeting. He was the grandson of an immigrant from Brauk, and that rough accent had weaseled its way into his vocabulary.

Neil did not see the white dot form on his chest as he spoke. Or if he did, it just seemed to be a beam of sunlight from a window. It was not until Maria dropped the knife and darted across the table. His instincts told him that this was not an aggressive move. If it were, she would have been sliced up like holiday ham. The explosion was enough to break the wall out.

Neil was pushed away from the girl and his tea was ruined. Opening his eye, he sighed. Although sore, he ignored the pain. Pain is a sign of being alive. Neil dusted his suit off while he sat up, and then stood up, extending a hand to the young woman as she spoke about him being right. Of course he was right. "I suggest you stand up." As he helped her up, he continued to speak. "When someone knocks you down, you stand back up. It's up to you if you punch them in the face or if you let them continue."

Neil reached into his duster, revealing the pistol on his waist, but he did not grab that. Instead, he brought out a steel box. And as he pulled out a cigar, a silver lighter slipped out. Lighting the brown stick, he smiled a little. He slid the box back into his jacket and walked over to the hole in the wall. "What a beautiful day." Neil turned around, and opened his desk. As his guards broke the door down, Neil pulled out something from the first drawer on the right.

"This lady will be considered as an ally for now. Do not harm her, or I will make sure your ribcage looks like my new window here. Even if it looks like she will kill me." In Neil's hand was a chunk of glittering steel. Almost a foot long, the revolver in his hand dwarfed the peashooter in his duster. The chambers were all loaded with hand-loaded ammunition. Grabbing a few speed-loaders with different colored ammunition (some were blue-tipped and others red), Neil walked over and placed a hand on Maria's shoulder.

"I think this is an invitation to do business with your now-former employers. What say you to us... accepting this invitation by bringing some nice gifts?" Neil's single eye peered to her. "I'm sure they will be thrilled to see the two of us." And with a hearty laugh, Neil began to walk towards the door—beckoning for the girl to follow him.

    Business. Was. Good.

"Ow..." she whined a little bit. She looked up to him as he pushed away from her and copied by pushing away from him. She curled her legs beneath her, something she was used to at the Vonnera. It was something he might even recognize as her showing respect. Until allowed, she would not move. She would not stand by his side, at his back, or in front of him because she felt herself lower than he was. Those were positions of trust, one she could not hold. At least, that is what she thought and what she was used to. When he held his hand out to her, she was stunned and that showed on her face. In fact, when she took his hand, she took it with both of her own as if to show she felt it was a gift of sorts, one she should handle with care. It wasn't something you snatched up or just took.

"Okay." Maria said with a nod and a smile following right after. Maria watched him with peaked curiosity. The way he talked was so funny to her; it kept making her just smile at him! When he pulled out the cigar, she blinked a little confused as to why he didn't grab his weapon. And then when he called it a beautiful day, she raised an eyebrow and pointed at the blasted out wall. "There's a hole in your wall; Isn't that supposed to be a bad thing?" she looked at him with an eyebrow raised as the guards came busting into the room. Seeing them, she immediately jumped behind him out of her own fear. She had come here to kill him after all. Thankfully, he had named her an ally, at least for now. And even said that if she looks like she's going to kill him, she should still be considered one?

That one threw her off. Well, it would have if she had heard it. As he began doing stuff with whatever that color-coded stuff was, Maria just wanted one thing. And as he walked over to placed his hand on her shoulder, she asked for it! "Talk again!" she said with a little happy jump toward him, putting her hands together as if she were begging him to do so. She really did love the way he talked. It was his plan anyway, since he did have something to say, but hearing him made her smile even bigger. "Okay!" she agreed immediately and followed behind him as he beckoned her. She stopped for a moment though and stared at his back. Something made her feel uncomfortable. "Um..." she spoke up a little worried, "Where am I supposed to walk? I work for you now... so where do your workers go?"

"Um... Where am I supposed to walk? I work for you now... so where do your workers go?" Neil continued to walk, but arched his head back so she could see the grin on his face. He was going to make deals today, so of course he would be happy. Contracts, signings, and the fear on their faces! It all made him giddy inside. "Simple—you walk where I tell you to walk. Although I assure you we will not be walking all the way back to your former home." Neil motioned with his hand for her to be at his side.

And sure enough, they weren't. Black carriages pulled by steeds covered in black cloth (which hid shimmering steel armor) were waiting at the front gate. Twenty-six men and women stood at attention. Some had swords, others had crossbows. A few near the center had what looked to be firearms. They were Neil's personal guards. "My friends, we have gotten an invitation. And as you know, I am not a rude man. The Vonnera family has 'invited,'" and one could feel the sarcasm seeping through his fangs, "us to their home. They also have requested that we bring the entertainment. Quite rude of them to ask that, but..."

Neil's face twisted into even more of a sadistic smile. It was like a wolf who knew his prey was cornered—and the prey didn't know a damn thing. "I'm sure we can manage." Neil turned to Maria. "You will ride in the carriage with me." Neil's carriage was only slightly different from the other five. It was slightly elongated to give the boss some more leg room. It also was the only one with an ashtray.

The horses stampeded down the roads towards the Vonnera house. During the cart ride, Neil did pass the time by talking to the young lady he had just met. Inside the carriage was Neil, Maria, and Grigori. Grigori was a former Zakatian military guy who was AWOL after accidentally killing a mother and her two kids during an unsanctioned mortar test. He was afraid of going back, so he hid where no government would dare touch him. His hair was still buzz-cut and he was built like something out of an action comic.

"So, I believe we should have some introductions. I am Neil O'Cary, although you must know that already. So I must now ask your name. If we are to be working together, it is only polite to have one another's name." After getting the introduction, Neil continued to talk to her. He explained certain things like benefits packages that the Scarlettelli offered and told her how they were better than the Vonnera.

But he noticed something. About halfway through the ride, Neil stopped making sense with his sentences. He would start saying things like "The firetruck is red" and "The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog." Complete sentences, but nothing that made any lick of sense. Why? To test this girl. If she called him out on something, he'd say "Oh, you must have heard wrong. I actually said ____." But she didn't all the time. He was going to have fun toying with her he could tell. But he'd need to find some way of snapping her to attention.

At the Vonerra household, the guards at the front gate were already dealt with and the way to the front door of their manor was clear. Neil stepped out of his carriage and helped Maria out just like any gentleman should. At the front door, Neil's men were silently preparing to knock on the door. As Neil approached, he gave them a nod... and they knocked at the door. It was quite a normal knock.

Well, if a normal knock was five sticks of dynamite planted on the hinges and at the lock.

The gaping hole resembled the blown-out wall. "And I'll huff, and I'll puff, and I'll blow your house in. Isn't that how it goes?" Neil stepped forward, lighting another cigar. Clearing his throat, Neil yelled into the dust cloud. "Mister Gabriel Vonnera. You have sent me not one, but two invitations to do business with you. Now, I have come here in a good mood. I am willing to discuss the terms of our upcoming arrangement. But if you sully my mood, I may not be so... compassionate when it comes to your end of the deal."

Okay! Next to him, got it. Wait, next to him? She ran up beside him exactly how he motioned, but was confused. She stared at him, thinking to herself the entire time that they made their little trip to the carriage. He began speaking to everyone, so she watched him even closer! She couldn't help it! He talked so... so... cutely! Oh, he'd kill her if she ever said that out loud, that was obvious. It was true though. His accent was utterly adorable. Where ever he came from, she wanted to go there! Either that, or she wanted to stick around him for as long as possible. He suddenly turned to her, causing her to jump a bit. "I'm riding with you? Really?" she asked in surprise, blinking a couple times, but then smiling, "Okay..." It was confusing, but he was obviously much different than the Vonnera.

Once she was allowed in the car, Maria looked around with her mouth slightly gaped. She was in awe of all of it. She never saw anything this nice, especially from the inside of it! She made sure to sit next to Neil too. Grigori attempted to, but she sorta 'appeared' already sitting there. He merely took the seat across from her, which was even more surprising! She thought she'd get in trouble. She seemed to get away with so much more with these guys. As they began the ride, Neil decided to introduce himself and then asked her name. "Actually no." she said after he ended his questions, "They only called you the Dragon and described you with an eye-patch; I didn't know an-..." Maria suddenly seemed to notice something outside the window and crawled over Neil to look out at it.

"Eep!" she squeaked when she was pulled back in and sat down. He wasn't rough though, which caused her to puff out her cheeks in curiosity and stare at him a bit before sitting up again. She glanced out the back window, but they had gone too far for her to confirm what she saw. "Maria... Maria Vonnera." she gave him her name with a sweet smile added on, "I've never had anyone work with me before. I don't know what I'm supposed to do. I usually just take orders. What does it mean to actually work with another person? Not just for them?" Her questions were odd and so obvious to other people, but to her they really needed to be answered. She had no idea how to work as a 'team'. She was always just pawn; She was someone to listen and follow the orders of those above her.

While he explained all of this, every now and then he'd confuse the ever living shit out of her with a random sentence that made absolutely no sense. She ignored it at first, but when it happened a few more times, she gave him the most worried look. She brought the back of her hand up to his forehead and then both to each of his cheeks. "Are you okay?" she asked with a worried tone, "You don't have a temperature... Did you notice you were talking so strangely? You stopped making much sense..." After that bit, they pulled up to the Vonnera household and Maria almost went up to see the people she knew, but realized quickly that it'd be a pretty stupid idea at this point. Instead, she followed beside Neil, making sure to stay at his side like he had motioned at the house before.

BOOM! The sound of a loud explosion overwhelmed the area. Many people in the streets ran, refusing to get in the middle of a war the Vonnera started with anyone. This was when Maria showed a little more fear than before. She walked a little closer to Neil and sort of half-hid behind him. She wanted to correct his silly mistake about blowing the house in, but decided he did that on purpose and left it be. She walked with him, still keeping closer and slightly behind, as they made their way through the smoke. "You! O'Cary!? What is the meaning of this?!" Gabriel Vonnera and his wife rushed into the main hall of their home, soon noticing that a frightened Maria was standing there too, "You stupid little bitch! You had your orders! Do you dare betray me!? You useless trash!"

Maria visibly winced every time that she was insulted or he yelled at her. She could take a lot of physical pain, but the verbal stuff were things she couldn't handle. It was one of the reasons she had a good talent of blocking people who were talking out. With Neil it had been different; he didn't yell at her and was actually kind of nice to her. She listened to what he was saying and especially to how he sounded when he was saying it: happy and sort of gentle, at least in her opinion. "I knew we should have gotten rid of that little whore sooner." his wife spoke harshly, standing behind her husband and pushing him forward, "Go on, dear, you sent the girl... Do your business with O'Cary." Although she stayed silent about it, she narrowed her eyes at the woman's last comment.

Neil smiled to her. "To work with someone... It's hard to 'splain. I'm still your boss, so I still will give ya orders... But I won't be hiding behind a desk. I have my own jobs to attend to, but I won't just send you off to a death mission like you were today. If it seems tough, it is because I have faith in your skills." Neil's conversations went on and on, and she seemed to only half-tune in.

Neil began to sputter nonsense, and she caught on quick. She felt him for a temperature, and he gave her an odd look. "I am testing to see if you actually listen or not." Maria looked a little disheartened, but immediately cheered up as she finished her sentence. "No, I listen... just not to what you say, but how you sound when you say it." Neil chuckled. She was a wild card. "My accent really is that 'sprisin' to you? Well, then when I say 'Maria,' I want you to actually listen to what I have to say. Deal?" When Neil said 'Deal,' it was not a request. It was an order. It was him telling her 'If I say Maria and you don't pay attention, you will be thrown to the dogs. Maybe literally.' It had a further undertone of 'And I don't want to do that.'

As they made their way to the house, the entire block shook as the door was knocked on. Or in. Or everywhere, if you must be technical. Gabriel Vonnera rushed down the hall with his wife in tow. He called out to Neil, wondering what he was doing. "Oh, I just thought you should get the same redecoration that you gave my house. Lets the breeze in quite well, dontcha think?" Gabriel spouted some obscenities about Maria, but Neil didn't react. Thankfully, his wife pushed him towards Neil before that continued. He didn't quite like hearing those words from that guy's mouth.

"I'm not entirely sure what I have done to force you into forcibly redecorating my house, let alone force not one, but two attacks on my person..." Neil looked very confused as she spoke this. But it was the sarcastic "Why, Johnny? Why do you hurt me so? Why do you do these stupid things that make me shoot you?" And that faded away. Neil glared at the man. "But I have kept my word on all of our deals." Neil's words were a dagger and a shield. They were stabbing at Gabriel to tell him "You broke an agreement by doing this" while also keeping a "But I did no such thing to warrant it" to protect himself. He was confident in his ability to defend against any attack Gabriel threw at him.

And just as soon as the spine-shivering evil-eye appeared, it faded away back to the same confusion as before."If you wish to dispute that claim, then by all means, show me the evidence." Neil eyed Eldia, and then turned his gaze back to Gabriel. "But if this is merely a personal grievance..." Neil sounded quite bored as he finished. "Then every rule of cordiality is revoked."

"Fuck you, you pompous sonnuvabitch. You think you're in charge of everything, that you rule this town. You think that you have the know on everyone. O'Cary, you're a bastard and I want you dead!" Laughter. Neil laughed. Hard. He actually dropped his cigar on the floor, and held his gut.

"Oh man, why didn't you tell me you worked as a comedian on the side? I would have asked you to perform at my birthday party!" Gabriel scowled... and maybe growled. Neil didn't know, he was laughing too hard. And then, a hand motion from Gabriel. "Fuck it, kill him!" From in front of Neil, two men popped out of the hallway and each fired a crossbow bolt at him.

Both hit him in his chest. Neil stood there, immobile. And then he looked back up, like nothing happened. He sighed. "Gabby-boy, I thought we might be able to conduct a deal..." The bolts slid out as the men approached, drawing daggers. "Like civilized people..." From the wounds, no blood. But black. It looked like tar. And then, two snakes erutped from Neil's back.

Their fangs bore into the men who had harmed him. Their throats crushed under the pressure of the alligator-like jaws. The blackness of these two tentacles was hard to describe. How does one picture a writhing pitch black snake? It was as dark as being left in a cell with no windows or openings. "But apparently not." And the tentacles let go of the men, their life far gone.

Neil stepped forward, getting closer to Gabriel. The man retreated and pulled out a dagger. "Stay away! Stay away, monster!" "Now, don't be rude. I don't barge into your home and start calling you a monster." Neil was sarcastic as a teenage schoolboy. One of the tentacles lashed out and bit into the dagger, shattering the blade.

Gabriel fell backwards in shock, and soon Neil stood over him. "I am willing to let you live. For a price." Neil noticed something about Eldia earlier, and he could see it moreso now. Disinterest. "Wh-whatever you want, just don't kill me!" Neil knelt down, a smile upon his face like no demon could dare fathom. "I wish to make a deal."

Arcana formed in his hand, its shape that of a contract. It was more like a wireframe of it. Glowing red outlined the shape and the word 'GEIS' in fine handwriting. But there was no substance. "First condition. You leave Grandview. Permanently." As he spoke, the words appeared on the transparent contract. "Second condition. You leave your wife. Permanently. Third condition. Your wife gets control of your monetary funds. Completely. Fourth condition. I get your business dealings. Completely." As he finished, the words were glowing red.

"As for my end of the deal. I will not kill you. I will let you leave Grandview. If you do not leave Grandview within three days, you will die a very painful death. If you break any of the conditions I have set, this protection is voided. That is my deal." And as he said 'That is my deal,' the words stopped. Instead, Neil's signature appeared. "Do you accept, Gabriel Vonnera?"

"Deal!" A word that Maria Vonnera would come to fear. Though ignorant of the severity of that word and it's meaning now, Maria would soon understand exactly how 'deals' work with this man. It isn't like the rest; it is his word and his law. The deals that Neil made were truly binding, not just the small promises one would make to a friend and break later because they 'forgot' or 'couldn't do it'. No. Making a deal with Neil was as valid as signing a contract in blood, or binding yourself to a demon. The small white haired woman had no idea of this and that 'deal' she just made, though seemingly small and insignificant, was about to become part of her life's creed. And with a sweet smile and cute giggle, that ignorant young woman began her journey of deals with Neil O'Cary.

Maria blocked a lot of the conversation out; she had not heard him say her name. The yelling, the insults, and the harsh nature of the conversation was something she didn't want to listen to. If she listened to things like this all the time, she wouldn't be as happy as she was. It was her way of staying innocent; it was her way of not going insane in this town of Grandview. Until Neil, she didn't like listening to things talk and only listened when she had to. But at this time three words hit her ears and her attention was pulled back to Gabriel Vonnera. Two crossbow bolts came firing out from the side halls, hitting Neil in the chest. Maria brought her hands up to her mouth in horror, her eyes widening in worry as she saw his body pierced by the two attacks. Were his guards going to help!?

When Neil spoke again and the bolts left no wound, Maria watched on in shock. She didn't understand what kind of power this was. It looked so dark, so demonic. It made her wonder why he was called dragon over demon. For a moment, she was truly frightened of him, but she had felt frightened many times before. As he stepped toward Gabriel, Maria kept a close eye on their surroundings and kept watch. She saw no guards coming in; there were only his carriage on the outside of the house. She continued observing as Neil began offering this pig a deal, which caused her to pout a bit. She sort of wanted this man dead; With how many horrible things they did to her, him dying would have been best for her. And as each condition of the deal was made, Maria saw a cocky smirk from Eldia.

"Wh-Whatever you want! I'll sign, I'll sign! It's a deal!" As Gabriel went to sign the contract Neil was showing, Maria nervously placed a hand on Gabriel's wrist and another on Neil's. Her hands were trembling, wondering if she would get in trouble for doing this. She did work for him now. And when she looked up to him to explain herself, that evil eye shot fear into her heart and she froze. He asked her exactly what she was doing, but she froze. "Maria." he said her name, causing her to snap into attention. "Th-This is what she wants." Maria said, motioning with her eyes over to Eldia, who glared angrily at her. Maria looked away from Eldia and then back to Neil, removing her hands from both his and Gabriel's wrist. "Silence you lying whorish child!" Eldia said as if Maria was going to listen.

"I don't work for you anymore." was all Maria said, her eyes narrowed in an angry glare at Eldia before turning back to Neil. It was then that Gabriel stood up and demanded that Maria explain herself, yelling and causing her to flinch again. "She knows that Mister Vonnera was getting bored of her and all she's been doing is using him for his money, so she sent me after you." Maria explained to Neil, ignoring the piece of shit behind her, "She knows how you work and that you're a man of your word. She knows about the deals you make and that no one dare break them... So she made up this entire plan; That's why she wanted to get rid of me too, because she knew I couldn't fight you, knew you'd come with a deal, and thought getting rid of me as a witness and her husband would get her all of the money she's been wanting this entire time. I'm sorry for stopping you, but I didn't want you to fall into her trap!"

Maria had done something she shouldn't have. She interrupted a deal. Or maybe she should have. No, she did exactly what she should have. Neil looked to her as she finished explaining. "I rescind my signature." The contract vanished as if it had been lit on fire. Neil stood up, and took a step towards Eldia. The woman did not flinch like her husband.

Not until she saw Neil's eye turn red. It didn't fade into red. No, he blinked and it was as red as blood. She swallowed. Fear was a good thing, and it was necessary to keep up a reputation in this business. In fact, it was worth the same as someone's word—the two go hand-in-hand. Think of it this way, someone's word was cash, but the fear they caused was the gold deposit back in Fort Knox.

Neil put his hand in the right pocket of his duster. And smiled. But this was not a good smile. This was a smile Maria would be happy to have not seen—had it not been for the mirror on the wall which gave Maria a perfect view of her new boss's distorted face. "To me," Neil's tone was far less relaxed than before, "there are three things I can not stand."

Neil raised his left hand, the back of it facing Eldia. "One." And up went his index finger. "Pineapples on pizza. The concept of fruit on that disgusts me." Neil's index finger lowered, and his ring finger raised. "Two. People who go back on their word. It is a currency, and I like having my wallet secure." And as that finger went down, up went the middle. "Three. Being used."

With no explanation on that last one, Neil's right hand swooshed out of his pocket. And there was a thunderous bark. A flash of steel and fire. Eldia Vonerra did not stand for much longer. A hole drilled between her eyes, she stared in shock at the steel monster in Neil's hand. Her delicate legs fell, and her entire body slumped. It would be best to not look at what was left of the back of her head, as a massive .44 magnum round had cleaved cleanly into her head. Blood, among other pink and red bits, splattered the stairs and walls.

It was like someone had two bad cans of crimson and salmon-pink spraypaint. Some bits were large, others were tiny and fine. Fragments of white bone and scalp were down the hall, and Neil did not dare try to look at her any longer than he had to. He tossed his cigar onto her corpse, not caring if it caught fire. He knelt back down to see Gabriel piss himself. Literally.

"Mister Vonnera. I am terribly sorry it has come to this. Your wife seems to have set you up. However, I still am not pleased with your conduct today. So we shall make a deal. This one between the two of us, and the two of us alone." The contract once again formed like before, empty this time. "First condition. You leave Grandview. Permanently. Second condition. I control of your monetary funds. Completely. Third condition. I get your business dealings. Completely." The rest was the same, but before Gabriel could sign, Neil turned to Maria. "Is this deal acceptable to you? Is there anything else I should know?"

There was a change in him that caused a strong shiver to slither it's way up Maria's spine. She stopped him from making a horrible deal and from being used, but this change didn't make him seem happier. He was scary, very scary. His tone was less relaxed and as he began speaking to Eldia in this frightening manner, Maria felt her attention fading in and out. She was trying not to do that. She was trying hard to listen, but it wasn't working. And when that gun shot rang out, Maria's entire body jumped and then stiffened. The frightening scene of blood, gore, and shattered bone that splattered through out the area was not something she could usually handle seeing. In fact, she blocked everything out at this point, beginning to think on other things that came to her mind.

As Neil spoke to Gabriel, Maria truly heard none of it. When he looked back to her, he'd see exactly how dazed she was. Her pupil was dilated, her skin pale, and her eyes looking upward toward a large window that stood at the top of the stairs they were standing near. She did not hear him, but that changed a moment later when he called out her name. "Maria." She closed her eyes for a moment and opened them to look toward Neil. He repeated his question about Gabriel and she thought for a moment. "Yes." she said. Her tone was almost ghostly as she turned toward one of the pictures hanging on the wall. "N-No. How could you ev-..." Gabriel spoke up in shock before Maria turned to him with her dead stare. "I know everything." was her only ghostly reply to him about that.

"This is the one place even Eldia did not know he held money. They always thought I wasn't listening..." Maria said as she scratched at the painting, ripping her hand through it and opening a safe, "This painting is bolted to the wall... Only way to get to what's behind it is by ripping through it... It's famous, the painting is I mean. Well, the original is. Gabriel got a forgery done to make sure that no one would ever find the safe... They'd assume this work of art was worth millions in gold, but no... He had that painting sent out to Zakat, in another safe house he has..." Maria just spilled every bit of secret information she held about Gabriel and his other deals. He was a powerful man, and things like this were why. She pulled out a large bag of platinum and walked it over to Neil, dropping it.

"There..." she said and looked away from both of them. "Yo-You sneaky little witch." Gabriel just began throwing insult after insult at Maria, telling her how he could have just left her on the street and let her rot. He continued on about all the 'training' he had so 'graciously' given. She ignored him completely. Instead, she stared out the front door and noticed someone familiar pointing something toward them. Seeing a straight white light flicker in the sun pointing toward Neil's back, Maria realized what it was again. "MOVE!" she screamed and pushed Neil as hard as she could. Not being in an easily knocked over chair this time, it was much harder, but it would easily be enought to allow a small bead to fly in between both of them and slam into the stairway, creating another explosion.

"Him! He's the one that attacked your house the first time! He's the one that Eldia sent!" Maria snapped out of her ghostly daze and pointed toward a smirking blonde man with a sniper-like gun that was obviously some sort of Arcane Weapon. The man stepped into the house with a hand on his hip. "Well, well... Interesting." the man spoke up, tilting himself to the side to look around Neil and Maria. He took note of the body laying on the floor and shook his head. "Well, it doesn't seem like I'm going to get paid..." he said with a sigh and rolled his eyes, rubbing the back of his head, "I actually gotta apologize then... Wouldn'ta taken that last shot if I'da known that my employer was already dead... Haha... Sorry about that." The man's name was Frankie R. Lawrence, a pretty well known hit man.

Maria, Maria, Maria. As she finished handing over the platinum, Neil smiled. He laughed a little too. And then he patted her head. Thrice. Maria had done him quite a good service. So good of a service, that she deserved more than a thanks. He, too, ignored Gabriel's insults that were being thrown around. The man had no power. He just had words. And they weren't his word either. Just penniless, pathetic words.

As the elevator music in Neil's head continued, he heard the record needle rip away from the record as he was pushed away by Maria. He wasn't pushed down. No, just away. He looked a little confused, but a familiar explosion helped realize that she had done the right thing. Neil turned around as Maria pointed the would-be assassin out.

Frankie's gun was lowered, as a way of almost saying "No violence now, please." Neil hadn't worked with Frankie before, but he had heard of him. Frankly, (if you'll excuse the pun) Frankie was someone Neil wanted on his side. The guy had a good eye for shooting, and he had a devastating weapon. With a blink, Neil's eye returned to its normal blue as Maria explained the obvious.

"Last I checked, you," he looked to Maria slightly before turning back to Frankie, "were the one that attacked my house first." He smirked a little, as it was a bit of him picking on the new girl. Frankie explained his situation, and Neil just shook his head. "Frankie-boy, I understand. Business is business. You're the messenger, that's all. Even if your message may be a bullet, it's still only a message."

Neil extended a hand towards Frankie. "I do not hold ill-will towards a messenger for doing their job. Instead, I am wondering if I may acquire your services on a more permanent basis." Neil turned sideways and leaned up against the wall. He could keep an eye on Gabriel and Frankie now. "I am asking to hire you as a security consultant and as a 'selective relocation' expert. It is nothing major, although I would not allow you to take out third-party contracts. But your pay will be good enough to cover any thought of that."

"So what do you say, Frankie-boy?" After Frankie answered, Neil's head rotated to see Gabriel. "And you have not answered my offer, Mister Vonnera. I would like an answer shortly or my gracious offer will disappear."

"I-I-I... I didn't mean it! I promise! I was only doing what I was told; I'm not allowed to tell anyone no, not here. They'll just hurt me more! If I had known you were Neil, I wouldn't have done it!" Odd statement, yes. The weirder part was she meant it. Well, she meant what she meant by it. It was her way of saying she would have chosen him over them any day if she would have known him previously. She just had an odd way of expressing that. Gabriel even looked at her like she was stupid. "I swear, I don't ever understand a word that comes out of your mouth." he said in a condescending tone. "You don't need too, you're not important." Maria looked away from him  with an added 'hmph' and crossed her arms, "Now that I don't have to listen to you anymore, just shut up and sit."

Before Gabriel could say anything else, Neil began speaking up to Frankie, who had been saying something Maria didn't catch because she was talking to Gabriel. When Neil held out his hand, Frankie eagerly moved forward and shook it with a goofy smile on his face. "Want me permanently, eh? I see. It'd be nice to have at least one house in this town not tryin' to cut my head off..." he said as he brought his hand back and put a hand under his chin like he was thinking, "Yeah, if you really can make up my lost salary, sure, you got a deal there." That word; that word again. Unlike Maria, Frankie knew exactly how strong that word 'deal' was with those who worked along side Neil; he wasn't stupid enough to say it just cause. And then the stage once again made a turn to Gabriel.

"I don't exactly have a choice, do I? I say yes, you get all of my stuff and I'm left with nothing. I say no, you splatter my brains all over the damn stairway..." Gabriel said angrily and stood up straight, "Fine. I will sign your damn contract and you will have everything of mine." Maria giggled, causing her to receive a glare from Gabriel. Maria lowered her gaze and went to hide behind Neil, but a hand suddenly met her shoulder. She looked up to see Frankie. "Don't you worry your pretty little head about that old bastard." Frankie said, smiling kindly down toward Maria. She blinked once and suddenly bopped the guy on the head; it wasn't enough to really hurt, but he did take a step back, "Hey! Why'd ya do that?!" Maria puffed up her cheeks, pouting, "You almost blew up us twice today!"

"Ack... Sorry!" Frankie apologized, kinda laughing about it and waving his hands in front of him. "Blew us up." Neil said in a manner that Maria could tell was a correction of what she said, "And do not hate him for it. He had a job, just like you. I am sure that if I had met Frankie face-to-face like I did you, we would have come to an agreement then and there. Business is business, and I can't hate the messenger." Maria turned toward Neil and blinked a few times, stepping away from both of them. "Blew up us, blew us up... blew us up today twice...." Maria kept repeating it to herself, trying to get what sounded right and then pointed to Gabriel so Neil could finish his contract, which Gabriel would immediately sign, "Blew us up two times... blew us up twice today... Yeah, okay. That's it."

A handshake. That is what Neil offered to Frankie Lawrence. And the young man accepted. A deal. That was now settled. Neil smiled, as he liked when deals went well. All Neil wanted was a good security team, right? Wrong. Neil wanted Frankie off of the streets. He didn't want someone with that much skill available for hire. Sure, there were other assassins who could get the job done. But if Neil controlled the best of them, then he felt safe. Business is business, and sometimes the best option isn't to remove the competition.

Sometimes, the best option is to let them run free, but limit what they can grow into. Put them in an invisible fence, let them roam around inside like there's no limit. But when they get to the borders, they hit a wall. They can get ambitious, but they can't fill those ambitions. That is how Neil dealt with his competition most of the time. The Vonnera were an exceptional case. They existed outside of the norms.

And Gabriel Vonnera understood what position he was in. He had no leverage. He had no way to gain at this point. Neil held all but the joker in this game of Old Maid. He was going to win, and that much was sure. Neil smiled again, just as eerily as he did before. "No, I am not taking everything you have. I am letting you keep your life and the clothes on your back. I am sure that suit is worth something."

As their conversation about the deal continued, Frankie and Maria had their own little lover's spat. Neil heard Frankie blurt out an exclamation of pain and glanced over to him, seeing Maria getting upset. She didn't quite know the business yet—but she would. Neil relished in the thought of teaching someone the business. Neil correct Maria's grammar and explained that Frankie was just a messenger. He wasn't an enemy. There was also an underlying message of 'money can sometimes buy loyalty,' but he didn't know if she got that.

Gabriel finally begrudgingly placed his finger up to the contract, and a tiny bit of his blood seeped from his thumb. A crimson fingerprint stained the invisible form, and soon a copy of Gabriel's signature flooded next to it. The contract flashed gold then disappeared. "And thus, our business is done. Leave Grandview, Gabriel Vonnera. And I assure you that it is in your best interests to never return." Neil smiled as he turned away. Gabriel muttered some things under his breath.

In passing, Neil's hand rubbed against Maria's back, pulling her along. "I think this is going to be the start of a good fiscal year." Business was good for Neil O'Cary. But business was going to get better. He had two new security consultants, and he was happy to see them grow within his organization. But the first thing he'd have to do is fix his study. Frankie was not informed of it just yet, but the repair costs would be coming out of his paycheck. Business is business, and that's how insurance works in Grandview.
