"Such is my luck, I suppose." It had been such a beautiful day. And I mean such a beautiful day earlier. A light breeze, sunlight that wasn't too bright, and a steady temperature. The carriages Alain had been leading the convoy of had all the windows open. While traveling near a small village right outside of his homeland's border, a wheel on the supply carriage snapped. It wasn't something that could be repaired, and the spare was nowhere to be seen. The woodsmith in the village would be back the following day, so Alain, the leader of this expedition, decided to set up camp until the next day. A small inn was offered to house them, which he graciously accepted. But it was so nice of a day, and Alain did not want to spend it inside, waiting. Instead, he decided to take a walk. Well, not without calling his superiors and the dig team and informing them they'd be a day later than originally expected.
The start had him going through the village. Not many buildings were here, especially compared to Colburn. But it was a nice little village. Windows were open, bread and pies were baking, and it just felt like a quaint, homely place. Children ran and played through the streets, their mothers occasionally looking out from a window or doorframe. He could see men straining as they hauled lumber, metal, and stones. A new building might be coming up, as he heard bits and pieces of their conversations. Tidbits of a joke about Regus's hammer hitting someone, chatter about how the design looked sturdy, and even parts about how one man's wife gave birth the day before all filled the air as the line passed. This was the life in a small town.
The man in blue left the village to see the outlying area. He wasn't afraid of anything that would come out of the forest, as he was armed... and he wasn't slow either. He followed a fallen stone fence, simply wandering. He felt he could find his way back. It was so clear, there was nothing obstructing his view or path. Ah, but then Alain felt something hit his nose. Cold. It moved slightly. He then realized... water. He looked up and saw it. A dark cloud moving exceptionally fast. He sighed as he felt another hit upon his face. And another. And another. And before long, he could not count them. He saw a large tree up ahead, which was closer than the village which he could no longer see in the distance. Instead of going over terrain he had no idea about in hopes of getting to a warm shelter... he'd take what path he could see and head for that tree.
Alain could still see through his glasses as no water drops appeared on them. He could see that tree. He was making quick strides toward it. He could only think of those children, who were probably be hurried inside by their mothers. He could only think of those men, whose work probably would not stop even in this weather. Those windows were being slammed shut and the sweet aroma disappearing. Only to be replaced by the sound of rain rapping upon wood and stone. But for Alain, no such noises were in his ears. Only the roar of rain hitting grass could be heard. It was a beautiful sound, even if the outlook on it was bleak. Reaching the tree, he sighed. He spoke of his luck, somewhat cursing it. His clothes, especially his blue military-style overcoat, were now everything but dry. He hoped that the rain would subside soon...
